GEAR-LESS TRANSMISSION.

This mechanical project is a working model of the gear-less transmission. And Gear-less transmission is also known as the elbow mechanism. This project of the gearless mechanism is introduced to increase the speed without the use of gears. Using gears is expensive and it also decreases efficiency. The advantage of gearless transmission is that it can transmit power at any angle without using any gears.

Gear-less transmission is an ingenious link mechanism of the slider and kinematic chain principle. It is a useful mechanical project and its applications include tower clocks, gang drilling, angular drilling between 0-90 degree and is also used in vehicles. There are various advantages of constructing a gearless mechanism that is its less complexity, no need for special machines, requires fewer calculations and it also provides freedom of interchangeability. Students who aim to work in automation & robotics in the near future can opt for this project as this mechanism finds its application in these areas too.

GEAR-LESS TRANSMISSION

GEAR-LESS TRANSMISSION THROUGH ELBOW MECHANISM

To transmit motion and power from one shaft to another which are not parallel and co-planar bevel gearing is generally employed. Thus, there are some little disadvantages associated with bevel gearing stated as complexity in manufacturing, high cost of replacement. To overcome all this heavy work, we have a mechanism that transmits motion between the 2 non-parallel (intersecting) and co-planar shafts. The mechanism comes to know as the Gearless elbow mechanism. It consists of elbow rods, hub, and shaft. Gearless elbow mechanism works on the principle of slider and kinematic chain principle. 

WORKING & CONSTRUCTION GEAR-LESS TRANSMISSIONS

Working Gearless;-

The Gearless transmission or El-bow mechanism is a device for transmitting motion at any fixed angle between the driving and driven shaft. The synthesis of this mechanism would reveal that it comprises a number of pins would be between 3 to 8, the more the pins the smoother the operation. These pins slide inside hollow cylinders thus formatting a sliding pair. Our mechanism has 3 such sliding pairs.

Powe of Transmission

These cylinders are placed in a Hollow pipe and are fastened at 120 degrees to each other. This whole assembly is mounted on the brackets wooden table. Power is supplied by an electric motor. The working of the mechanism is understood by the diagram. An unused form of transmission of power on the shaft located at an angle.

MOTION & DRIVEN GEAR MECHANISM

Motion is transmitted from driving to the driven shaft through the roads which are bent to conform to the angles between the shafts. These roads are located in the holes equally spaced around a circle and they are free to slide in & out as the shaft revolves. This type of drive is especially suitable where quiet operation at high speed is essential but only recommended for high duty.

CONSTRUCTION FOR GEAR-LESS TRANSMISSION

It consists of links or rods that are bend exactly at 90 degrees (right angle). The number of links required would be 3 to 8. The more the links, the smoother will be the operation. Links are made up of bright bars as the bright bar material has a good surface finish. These links slide inside the through and through drilled Cylinder. Thus forming a sliding pair. These cylinders are coupled to the input and output shaft with the help of the key. Power is supplied by an electric motor. 

ADVANTAGES OF GEAR-LESS TRANSMISSION

1) A mechanism is very simple due to the elimination of value mechanisms.

2) Mechanism is small.

3) No crank & crankshaft are necessary.

4) Lesser vibration because the reciprocating force is perfectly balanced.

5) Smooth & high-speed operation can be easily obtained by the cause of elimination of the value setting linkage.

6) Complete freedom of Interchangeability.

7) Power could be transferred to any desired angle.

8) Low-cost manufacturing.

9) Simple cooling system.

10) Portability of parts.
